7/14/18 - Walsenburg, CO
On the corner of Stout Avenue and West Utah Street, in the suburbs of Walsenburg, Colorado, part of the poorest county in the entire state, stood a man named Richard, and an unexpected litter of Blue Heeler, Pit-bull mixed pups. I stumbled upon the little bundles of energy, and sleepiness, on the walk back from breakfast one morning. And, by dinnertime Brielle had excitedly held each of the six little bundles of energy and sleepiness in her hands.
By the next day, one was sleeping in the van with us, and, as five week old puppies do, peeing the bed. He certainly didn't know better, but it was certainly warm on my leg.
We took our newfound "Bubbah," a cute name which remained general enough for us to not get too attached, to get a collar, leash, food, and a toy and then we took him out to the local park. He had a little trouble getting used to the leash and also attempted to eat every last piece of grass and stick small enough to fit in his mouth. But, we had plenty of laughs from his puppy antics and adorable, sleepy face.
The plan was to take our ferociously teething little nugget to the best no-kill animal shelter we could find along our route out of Walsenburg, once our fire dispatch had ended. (More on the new fire work in a write up coming out soon!)
We were certainly head over paws for his cuteness, but it simply was not the time for us to bring a dog into the van. We knew we would have to get him to a forever home that could give him the best care and attention!
And wouldn't you know it, a few hours later, before we could even call a shelter, our coworker texted us that another member of the camp team had found someone who would be able to take Bubbah home! As it turned out, the same family was able to take one of his sisters too. It made us happy that we knew he had a friend to get all of his crazy puppy energy and teething out with.
It was a fun Dog Day (and a half) and a good little glimpse into what it would be like to have a doggo in the van with us! To see just how sleepy this little pupper was, look at the video below!
